My Story
Hi! I’m Kaihan — an artist born in Xi’an, China. My love for drawing started in childhood, when I’d fill pages with watercolor sketches of everyday life and tape them proudly on my bedroom wall. That wall was my first “gallery,” though it didn’t last. One day, my parents, overwhelmed by the clutter, tore everything down without asking. I still remember how hard I cried. I’m not sure what I was thinking back then, but I know something was lost — and for a long time, I stopped drawing.
Like many students in China, I shifted my focus entirely to academics. It wasn’t until college, while studying a major I had no real passion for, that a friend reminded me of what I used to love. They introduced me to an art school — and that’s where my artistic journey truly began.
Starting with no formal training, and later discovering that I’m red-green colorblind, the road hasn’t been easy. But I’ve always held on to what I love: bold, expressive character art.
My style is diverse because I enjoy mimicking different aesthetics — but I’ve found a personal rhythm in semi-impressionistic brushwork and dramatic, stylized figures. I’m especially drawn to characters that feel cool, elegant, or powerful. Red and black are my favorite colors — not because I see them best, but because they feel the strongest to me.
I’m a quiet person by nature. I don’t talk much, and I often find comfort in being alone with games that feel more like art than entertainment — titles like INSIDE, Outer Wilds, and OneShot. For me, finishing one of these is like walking through a museum: silent, emotional, and deeply personal. That’s what I hope my own work can be for others someday — not just images, but experiences.
